The system distributes power for maximum performance. The great thing about this system is the behind-the-scenes way it operates. Its tone is also somewhat deeper and more robust than other 4-cylinder turbos we’ve driven.Īll this power is laid to the ground by the Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive System with Dynamic Torque Vectoring. There’s also plenty of snap, crackle, and pop courtesy of the large-bore high performance exhaust. Shifts are smooth as butter with the six-speed manual and the light clutch just adds to the driving excitement. There’s little to no fishtailing and it’s as if the car is daring you to push it even harder. The Michelin Super Sport tires grab hold of the road as if they’re coated with Gorilla Glue. The car practically drives like it’s on rails. Switch on Sport mode and the suspension gets firmer, steering gets tighter, and the throttle is more responsive. But we soon discover that where the Focus RS really shines is on the twisty, curvy back roads. There’s no torque steer or much tire spin at all. In the straightaways, we could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds and sprint the quarter mile in 13.6 seconds. Except for a bit of turbo lag, once you press the accelerator, it’s time to sit down, hold on, and shut up. Squeezing 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I4 engine doesn’t go unnoticed. This Teutonic terror looks like it means business! The Focus RS certainly sports an aggressive posture without going over the top like other sport compacts you see. Peeking through the wheels, we see blue Brembo brake calipers attached to large rotors. A contrasting black adorns the headlamp bezels, foglamps, and grille. A split grille with wire mesh, 19-inch gray-scale wheels, and a high-mount liftgate spoiler are just a few of the styling cues of the Focus RS. Granted, this package adds a few creature comforts but tacks on a whopping $2,785! Overall sticker price for this 2016 Focus RS is $39,560.Ī quick walkaround of our Stealth Gray Focus RS reveals plenty of sport styling and equipment. Our Focus RS was also equipped with the RS2 Package which adds 8-way, leather-trimmed Recaro seats, voice-activated navigation, and heated exterior mirrors, front seats, and steering wheel. Firepower such as launch control, selectable driving modes, and multi-mode suspension comes standard with this pint-sized hellion. ![]() ![]() ![]() Second, it features standard technology and performance features you’d expect to find in performance cars costing thousands more.Ī review of the window sticker reveals a cauldron of black magic designed to give the Focus RS an upper hand on its competition. First off, it hails from Germany where the Focus RS has been delighting Europeans since 2002. It’s definitely the black sheep of the family. Au contraire! In reality, the Focus name is really the only thing shared with its other stablemates within the Focus lineup. Some may roll their eyes and think this is just a gussied-up Focus hatchback with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive and that’s the end of story.

Overall, it makes us sad to write bad things about such a lovely plant, but when it comes to skincare, you will be better off without lavender. This was the year when using dried lavender flowers in pillows, wardrobes, and elsewhere became fashionable in Japan, so it seems that increased exposure to lavender results in increased risk of sensitivity. There is also an often cited Japanese study that made patch tests with lavender oil for 9 years and found a huge increase in lavender oil sensitivity in 1997 (from 1.1% in 1990 to 8.7% in 1997 and 13.9% in 1998). To make things even worse, lavender oil seems to be cytotoxic from concentrations as low as 0.25% (concentration up to 0.125% were ok). The two main components are linalyl acetate (about 50%) and linalool (about 35%) and both autoxidise on exposure to the air forming strong contact allergens. Now, let us look at the cons: similar to a bunch of other essential oils, the main components of lavender oil are potentially irritating fragrant components. We have found a study confirming this but it was the essential oil of the leaves and not the much more commonly used flowers and the two differ in their main chemical compounds very much. Lavender oil is also often claimed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It also has some local pain relieving and muscle relaxing magical powers. ![]() Another pro is that lavender oil has some nice antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. To maintain a healthy growth rate, the calf consumes three gallons of milk every day, gaining 22-26 pounds a week. ![]() This phenomenon is known as “allmothering” and the bond between family units, or clans, lasts even after calves are fully weaned at four years of age. At this age, the calf is dependent on the mother and the other sub-adult females in the group for care and protection. Their trunk-like any muscle-needs to be exercised until the calf musters enough strength, they suck on their trunk to self-soothe-much like a human infant sucks their thumb. "In short, the language retardation in Donald may have brought an end to the study," the authors write. At birth, the calf is nearly blind, and its skin is pinkish-gray the light color helps regulate its body temperature under the hot summer sun. Finally, one other possibility comes to mind, the authors point out: While Gua showed no signs of learning human languages, her brother Donald had begun imitating Gua's chimp noises. Or perhaps it was the fact that Gua was becoming stronger and less manageable, and that the Kelloggs feared she might harm her human brother. ![]() It could be that the Kelloggs were simply exhausted from nine months of nonstop parenting and scientific work. But as for why, the Kelloggs, who are so specific on so many other points, leave the reader wondering. We are told only that the study was terminated on March 28, 1932, when Gua was returned to the Orange Park primate colony through a gradual rehabilitating process. Our final concern is why the project ended when it did. As the Psychological Record authors describe: The experiment, however, ended rather abruptly and mysteriously. As such, the Psychological Record authors write, the Kelloggs' experiment "probably succeeded better than any study before its time in demonstrating the limitations heredity placed on an organism regardless of environmental opportunities as well as the developmental gains that could be made in enriched environments." ![]() They raised the two babies in exactly the same way, in addition to conducting an exhaustive list of scientific experiments that included subjects such as "blood pressure, memory, body size, scribbling, reflexes, depth perception, vocalization, locomotion, reactions to tickling, strength, manual dexterity, problem solving, fears, equilibrium, play behavior, climbing, obedience, grasping, language comprehension, attention span and others," the Psychological Record authors note.įor a while, Gua actually excelled at these tests compared to Donald.īut eventually, as NPR notes, Gua hit a cognitive wall: No amount of training or nurturing could overcome the fact that, genetically, she was a chimpanzee. Abandoning a human child in the wilderness would be ethically reprehensible, Kellogg knew, so he opted to experiment on the reverse scenario-bringing an infant animal into civilization.įor the next nine months, for 12 hours a day and seven days a week, Kellogg and his wife conducted tireless tests on Donald and Gua. Since his student days, Kellogg had dreamed of conducting such an experiment. He was fascinated by wild children, or those raised with no human contact, often in nature. ![]() Could a chimp grow up to behave like a human? Or even think it was a human? As later described in the Psychological Record, the idea was to see how environment influenced development. The couple planned to raise the chimp, Gua, alongside their own baby boy, Donald. On June 26, 1931, comparative psychologist Winthrop Niles Kellogg and his wife welcomed a new arrival home: not a human infant, but a baby chimpanzee. ![]() Since Jesus, who is God himself, accepted us ugly sinners, we must accept one another no matter what. In our practical and ever competing society, this may sound wrong. Those who are strong may think, “We have no reason to suffer for those who are weak.” But this passage mentions that those who are strong must bear with the failing of the weak.
